Casting Day Info for Actors

CASTING DAY IS THIS SUNDAY!

HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT:

WHAT IS CASTING DAY?

One Sunday every month is designated as the day on which any production that held auditions in the month prior can call actors who auditioned to offer them roles. Hearing back on the same day from all the productions you auditioned for allows you to make the most informed decision possible about which productions to be in. The Yale Drama Coalition (YDC) runs Casting Cycles to ensure casting is fair and accessible for actors and to help production teams communicate with each other and navigate the casting process. A neutral YDC representative, usually one of the Casting Cycle Coordinators, is available to help mediate any conflicts that might come up on Casting Day.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AS AN ACTOR ON CASTING DAY

  1. Think through your show and role preferences before casting day. If you have auditioned for multiple shows, think about whether you’ll be able to accept all of them if offered a role, or if there are some that you want to prioritize. Also think about what you’ll have time to commit to, and check if any of the shows you auditioned for have overlapping show/tech dates.
  2. Be by your phone from 12-4 on Casting Day. This is how production teams will reach you to offer you a role, and you don’t want to miss their call! Teams are allowed to begin making calls at noon, but may not be able to call you because they need to hear back from another actor. Not getting called right at noon does not mean you won’t get cast!
  3. If you get a call offering you a role, you will be told you have one hour to make a decision. This is to keep the Casting Day process efficient, as multiple production teams can be stuck waiting for one actor to make a decision. If you feel one hour is not enough time for you to make a decision, or you have not yet heard back from every show you auditioned for, you can reach out to the YDC Casting Cycle Coordinators, another YDC Board member, or the production team who called you and ask to talk to the YDC representative running Casting Day.
  4. You may not be offered any roles. If this is the case, productions you auditioned for will let you know that you have not been cast via email. This doesn’t mean you can’t be involved in other ways! Reach out to the teams if you’re interested in getting involved onthe production side!
  5. If you have any questions, reach out to the YDC Casting Cycle Coordinators (tomas.fuchs-lynch@yale.edu and nneka.moweta@yale.edu)
