Voyeur: An Original Film
by Delilah Napier & Lucy Tomasso
At present-day Yale University, two student actresses - Ella and Maxine - find themselves vying for one of the most fierce and flawed female characters in the western canon: the title role of Miss Julie. In the pressure-cooker of the rehearsal room, inspired by playwright August Strindberg’s own relentless pursuit of naturalism, the two women will stop at nothing to deliver the most “authentic” version of the show and themselves - until it is unclear where the stage ends and life begins. As internal and external pressure mounts, the actors begin to parallel the reckless choices of their characters, to the point where the line that separates performer and character becomes dangerously absent. A darkly comedic film that touches on the ill-defined borders between art and reality, the quest of the artist to find authenticity, and the day-to-day performance of being an Ivy League student, Voyeur will challenge the audience to consider the question: what is at risk when “the theater” disappears completely?
