My World
by Jake Gluckman
Benjy is a kind, gentle, and determined teenager who loves the ocean and dreams of working at an aquarium one day. He also has autism.
Upon changing high schools his senior year, Benjy finds himself considering life after graduation. Though Benjy’s mother, Caroline, wants a sheltered and structured life for him, Benjy has bigger dreams that he hesitates to share with his family. His brother, Quentin, is distant, and his new step-father, Jason, is unfamiliar with Benjy’s experience of the world.
Benjy’s life changes when he meets Caddy, a headstrong junior who loves her sister, Natalie, more than anything. Natalie, too, has autism, and together, Benjy, Natalie, Caddy, and Quentin grapple with the challenges of young adulthood and newfound independence. My World follows Benjy and his road to self discovery as he navigates his relationships with his family and new friends. It’s a story about living with disability, about making sacrifices for family, but above all, it’s the story of an inquisitive boy with big dreams.
