E/AMMA

Amma hates her literature seminar, but she likes Edith. So when Edith invites her to join a study group, she is eager to finally make community at a college where she feels so alone. So what, her roommate’s robot creeps her out? She has friends now!

But as the semester goes on, more than just her roommate has a robot. They become integrated into campus life and oddly, they never seem to work for Amma or her friends. When Amma finally figures out the problem, it is already too late and her world is irreversibly changed.

“E/AMMA” is a short film that explores the way race and gender mediate our relationship with technology, and the power and beauty of the communities created by and for women of color, especially in spaces where little else is designed with them in mind.
