Onward and Upward
by Charlie Romano and Will Wegner
In 1982, Walter Griffin made headlines after tying a lawn chair to a cluster of weather balloons and flying 16,000 feet into the sky. Nearly two decades later, Walter is still searching for his next great invention, but he struggles to get his ideas off the ground. His wife, Helen, would prefer that he secure a normal job, while their son, Mikey, is desperate for recognition of his own. Things are looking up when Mikey and Walter both begin lucrative new careers, but it soon becomes apparent that the family’s situation is far more precarious than it seems.
This workshop production of Onward and Upward will explore the development of a new musical through a variety of rehearsal techniques. We will examine story and character to help guide the revision of scenes and songs, culminating in a series of staged readings in December.
