next to normal
by Tom Kitt (Music) & Brian Yorkey (Book and Lyrics)
“You don’t have to be happy at all to be happy you’re alive.”
A mother struggling with bipolar depression, a father and husband just trying to keep his family and home in one piece, a daughter fighting to remain visible in spite of her perfect older brother. A stoner boyfriend and rocker psychiatrist round out this ensemble of ordinary people trying to find the strength to make it through one more day.
Ben Brantley of the New York Times: “This brave, breathtaking musical focuses squarely on the pain that cripples the members of a suburban family, and never for a minute does it let you escape the anguish at the core of their lives”.
A rock musical that explores the pain of love, and whether the cost is worth it.
