Audition For Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights

Audition Instructions:

If you’re having trouble signing up, make sure you’re logged into the site (see Log In button at the top). If you have recently logged into the site for the first time, click on the ‘My Account’ link in the top right, add your biography, fill in the “Full Name” text box, and write in any other information you wish to include. Including your full name in your biography allows us to view who has signed up for which audition time slot.

On 8/28 and 9/3, auditions will be in Room 100 of 220 York. On 8/31, auditions will be in the Ballroom in 220 York, Room 101.

Performers of all ethnic and gender identities are welcome and encouraged to audition, and will be considered for any role. This piece necessitates movement, some musical ability, deep thinking, and a willingness to explore. An incredibly experimental show, Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights will be greatly shaped by those who are a part of the cast and production team. We are looking for cast members who are excited to engage with this historic yet avant-garde work.

For your audition, please prepare one of the three sides listed under “Audition Materials.” You need not memorize the side, but you should be comfortable reading it. Gertrude Stein’s writing style is unconventional, and we’re interested in seeing how you bring this unusual text to life. You may be asked to do the side a second time with a note in mind.

You may also choose to present a short (90-second maximum) selection of any song that shows off your voice well. This could be anything: a pop song, aria, folk song, art song, “Happy Birthday” …truly whatever you like. You may sing a capella, but a piano accompanist will be available as well. This part of the audition is truly optional, and you will not be penalized if you do not prepare a song.

All auditionees will be led through a couple of vocal exercises, mainly to check vocal range and tone quality. Emil is writing the vocal score for Doctor Faustus based on the specific talents of the performers in the cast, so we’d like to get an idea of what you uniquely bring to the table!

Do not hesitate to contact Ryan (ryan.seffinger@yale.edu)or Jack (jack.mcauliffe@yale.edu) with any questions. We look forward to your audition!
