Woman and Scarecrow
by Marina Carr
“The world’s job is to take everything from you. Yours is not to let it.”
Woman is searching for a moment of redemption in the last hours of a wasted life, with Scarecrow as her only constant companion. Together they mourn their inability to love as Woman’s time runs out, trading stories of missed opportunities, motherhood, faith, disappointment, and family. They search for a way to return to the best of themselves, despite fearing they have already lost.
A playwright praised as the “foremost female dramatist in Ireland” Marina Carr nests female agency, the traditions of tragedy and Irish drama, and crises of self within this play. WOMAN AND SCARECROW stretches beyond the boundary of what is real, and forces us to question the world we thought we understood, just as our human agency gives way.
