Venus in Fur

A Senior Project in American Studies for Simone Policano

You don’t have to tell me about sadomasochism, I’m in the theatre! With this quip, leather lingerie-clad actress Vanda Jordan bursts into her audition for the 19th century S&M tale, Venus in Fur. Hours late, cursing, and drenched from the rain, she begs playwright/director Thomas Novachek to give her a shot. This wet, windblown nobody could never be right for the sophisticated part…could she? Vanda exhibits a mysterious command of the material, piquing Thomas’ interest with her secretive manner and seductive talents. As the two work through the script the lines between actor and character, play and reality, begin to blur. The pair enters into an increasingly serious game of domination and submission that only one of them can win. An exploration of gender roles, sexuality, and the power dynamics of desire, Venus in Fur is an unapologetically sexy look at the art of acting–onstage and off.
