Once
by Enda Walsh, Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová
Set in the streets of Dublin, Once tells the story of Guy and Girl, whose chance encounter grows into a friendship and love that will change their lives forever. He is an Irish busker living with his father, she a Czech immigrant packed in a little apartment with her eclectic family. Knowing each other only days but bound by shared loneliness and love of music, their lives entwine. Through their relationship, their communities—and others they meet along the way—also come together, all finding little ways to live out their dreams. Once explores how the briefest loves can be the deepest, and how finding the person who sees you truly will change your life forever.
This is an unconventional romance story, complicated by circumstance and narrated through emotive folk-influenced music. Performed by a cast of actor-musicians, the show speaks to the power of utilizing music to build community and belonging within the world around us, particularly by capturing the unique, diverse, and eclectic sounds of Dublin.
Please Note: The ensemble forms our band, so everyone will play an instrument in the show. A few are set in stone—Švec must play drums, and Baruška should play accordion, but all other characters are not necessarily set in stone (as in, we do need a cast member to play violin/fiddle, but it may be someone other than “Réza,” who traditionally plays that instrument).
