The Mystery of Irma Vep
A Penny Dreadful
by Charles Ludlam
Two actors…Six Characters…48 quick changes…Victorian England…A Dancing Mummy Queen…A cross-dressing vampire…Irma Vep sends Halloween into Victorian, quick-change, melodramatic overdrive! Put more eloquently: The Mystery of Irma Vep is a satire of several theatrical, literary, and film genres, including Victorian melodrama, the penny dreadful (think National Enquirer of the 19th century with a continuous plot), farce, Wuthering Heights, and Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca.
