Over the course of a clinical drug trial for antidepressants, two young volunteers named Connie and Tristan fall in love. Or is it just the dopamine? As the dosages increase and Connie and Tristan tumble into a deep infatuation, the results of the experiment threaten to upend their lives, as well as those of the doctors in charge. Smart, stirring, and painfully human, The Effect explores the messy intersection of love and depression.
The Effect is a senior project in Theater Studies for Gillian Bolt.
