I sold my soul to make it bright with electric light and now no one not I not she not they not he are interested in that thing and I and I I cannot go to hell I have sold my soul to make a light and the light is bright but not interesting in my sight and I would oh yes I would I would rather go to hell be I with all my might and then go to hell oh yes alright.

Doctor Faustus has his light, but it does not satisfy him. Marguerite Ida and Helena Annabel explores her complexities in a complicated age. The Dog says “thank you,” the Boy says “will you,” and the Country Woman is at the window. Gertrude Stein’s Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights is presented at Yale’s Whitney Theater with a brand-new score.

An absurd, tragicomic and avant-garde send-up of the Faust myth - a postmodern riff on religion, morality, and identity in the 20th century - an opera libretto never officially given a score - Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights is a fusion of performance, composition, and design. It serves as a Senior Project in Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies for Ryan Seffinger and a Senior Project in Music for Emil Ernström.
