The Balcony

How do we establish hierarchies? Can one attain power by simply appearing powerful? What makes power pleasurable to have, and what makes it uncomfortable? Subversive French playwright Jean Genet explored these themes in many of his iconic plays, but The Balcony was his largest-scale attempt. Set in a brothel in the midst of a revolution, a group of clients roleplaying as influential figures are forced to step into their roles in public in an attempt to preserve the status quo.
