The 39 Steps

by Patrick Barlow and Alfred Hitchcock

Poster of The 39 Steps

The 39 Steps is a loving, irreverent, and hilarious spoof of and homage to Hitchcock and the cinematic thriller. Based on a classic Alfred Hitchcock spy movie, the play uses only four actors to create the expansive world of the movie. It’s “absurdly enjoyable, gleefully theatrical” (in Ben Brantley’s words) and “a valentine to that kind of creativity and imagination, of doing so much with so little” (in Arnie Burton’s words). But most of all, it’s a show that dares to declare: “Let’s just all set ourselves resolutely to make this world a happier place!” (in the show’s own). And by putting on silly costumes, accents, and running around frantically pretending to do a chase across the Scottish moors, we intend to do just that.
