Virtual Performance FAQ

Yale College Arts is working with VirtualChoir to support undergraduate music ensembles in producing virtual performances. VirtualChoir’s focus is on keeping the virtual performance creation process as simple as possible so that performers can focus on creating meaningful performance experiences for their members and audiences.

  • How many pieces can my group record?
    • Yale College Arts can support the production of one produced video performance for each group. We will expand this opportunity if and when resources permit.
  • When can my group create our virtual performance?
    • All eligible undergraduate groups may create their virtual performance at any time during the 2020-2021 academic year.
  • How do the members of my group record their parts?
    • VirtualChoir will create a guide track for your group that everyone can perform to while recording.
      • Your group will need to provide a copy of the score for the piece as well as accompaniment tracks, or part-predominant rehearsal tracks, whatever will keep your group members in time and in tune with each other when performing apart.
      • The engineer will create a guide track and a submission link for the video uploads.
    • Complete guidelines for recording are at this link: https://www.virtualchoir.net/recordinginstructions
  • Where do group members send their recordings?
    •  VirtualChoir will provide a custom link to a Dropbox folder where your group members can submit their recorded tracks.
  • What happens to the files?
    • Virtual Choir will sync the files, mix the audio, optimize the video and audio quality, arrange licensing, and post the master online. You don’t need to worry about hosting, promotion, or licensing.
  • What is the turnaround time for a finished product?
    • Turnaround time is 2 weeks from the day that Virtual Choir receives all the materials needed to create final product. The more lead time we can provide to their team the better.
  • Where will my group’s final video be available?
    • The resulting produced videos will be published on the Yale College Arts website, Yale Arts Calendar, and will be available to groups to link to from their own websites and/or social media spaces.
  • Can my group request audio-only master file (such as mp3)?
    • Virtual Choir can deliver hi-res audio, CD quality audio, and 320kbps mp3s. Groups should specify what they need, and Virtual Choir add those files to the delivery folder.
  • Is there a cost to my group for this program?
    • This program is provided to all registered music organizations free of charge.
