Back to Africa
by Richard George
Back to Africa is an adaptation of Aeschylus’ Oresteia, transforming a trilogy of Greek tragedies into a story about a Black family who leaves the United States in search of hope and prosperity in a world destroyed by climate change and racial violence. Their journey is not so simple. Agamemnon, the leader of the African expedition, sacrifices his daughter Iphigenia to save the expedition. Her death launches a series of murders and family betrayals that trouble the peace and security of those who sailed the Atlantic with them and settled in their new home in Africa. Nevertheless, they all cry the name “Justice!” even when it seems there is no justice in sight.
