Payphone Sculpture Invitation
by Soleil Piverger
Call-to-Remember is an interactive, self-reflective sculpture consisting of a re-engineered payphone and phonebook. Visitors press the phone’s buttons to access and develop its memory storage; they are invited to dial a number to hear an audio file. People submitted over 70 audio files that are stored within the payphone. Visitors are also invited to record their own messages, which are then stored for future dialing. The message “This is a poem,” precedes each audio file. In Call-to-Remember, memory is a poem. When the “LOUD button” is pressed, the visitor is met with the statement: “This is my body, you are listening to the sound of my memories.” The phonebook accompanies this experience; it guides the visitor’s interaction via photos and a number directory. Call-to-Remember is a telephonic time capsule featuring content from those who submitted their artifacts, from the John Giorno Dial-A-Poem archives, and from those who interact with the sculpture in real-time. This project was made possible with the support of Larry Wilen, Andy Putman, Rachel Herschman, Laura Barnett, Marty Skoble, Saskia Globig, The Yale Center for Collaborative Arts and Media, The Yale Center for Engineering Innovation and Design, and Giorno Poetry Systems.
