Measure for Measure for Measure

This workshop production invites audiences into the ongoing work of students in THST 350: Gender, Justice and the Body Politic. Over the course of the semester, students in the seminar have engaged in an ensemble-driven process to adapt Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, viewing it through the lenses of gender, (in)justice, power (and its abuse) to create an original piece of theater incorporating adaptive interventions written and devised by it’s cast. The result, we hope, is an experience of polyphonous storytelling, art-making, and social and theatrical critique in which actors dissect Shakespeare’s work to rebuild it as their own and audiences are likewise encouraged to dig in to the story played out before them.

We cannot claim to have ‘solved’ Shakespeare’s notorious ‘problem play,’ but we invite audiences to join us as we dive into the problems Shakespeare poses, asking questions of his work and of the abusive systems of power he represents and seeking answers beyond those offered by his original text.
