When Ingrid Magnussen, a beautiful, imperious poet, receives a life sentence for murdering her lover, her adolescent daughter Astrid begins a four-year journey of self-discovery within the L.A. foster care system. A true chameleon, Astrid transforms under the influence of each of her foster mothers as she simultaneously distances herself from Ingrid, a rising celebrity from behind bars, said to be martyred for her strength. With a driving score rooted in the pop/rock musical world of sunny southern California, WHITE OLEANDER is one part mother-daughter drama, one part platform for the voice of the foster kid in America, and one part reflection on the age-old questions: How much do we owe to our parents? How much do we owe to ourselves?
