Violet

When desire has a dial tone.

Violet by Reese Weiden

It’s 1998. Violet Johnson is a good Christian girl. She’s also the hottest voice on the 1-900 line.

Seventeen and paying her own way through a small New England college, VIOLET takes calls from her dorm room whenever it’s empty. She tells herself it’s only for tuition. And no one knows, least of all MOLLIE, her lifelong best friend and college roommate.

Every night, strangers call. One keeps calling back. ARTHUR is tender where the others are crude, curious where they’re only hungry, and Violet starts to fall. What begins as a fantasy becomes the most honest thing in either of their lives, two people who, for the first time, feel truly seen. But the calls grow longer, the line between them grows thinner, and Arthur is closer to home than Violet ever imagined. Meanwhile, Mollie is carrying a secret of her own, and as both girls hide more from each other, a lifelong friendship begins to crack.

VIOLET is a dark comedy about wanting: first love and its wreckage, obsession dressed up as devotion, the desires we’re too scared to name until someone asks, in the dark, what we want.

It’s a play about what we’ll risk to be known.
