Top Girls
by Caryl Churchill
It is 1979. Marlene thinks the 80s are going to be stupendous. In London, Margaret Thatcher has just been elected as the first female prime minister of the United Kingdom. Marlene has just been promoted to the head of the Top Girls employment agency. To celebrate, she throws a fantastical dinner party over the weekend and invites six women from history, legend, art, and literature – six women who have the faces of her real sister, her real niece, and her real co-workers. When she returns to work on Monday morning, more than her shiny new office is waiting for her: her niece Angie has made a surprise visit to London. As much as Marlene longs to be free to choose a future that discards the life she left behind in her rural hometown, Angie’s appearance forces her to confront the consequences of her various decisions as her past continues to unsettle the present.
