Passio
by Arvo Pärt
Arvo Pärt’s “Passio Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Joannem” (1982) is the distillation of the composer’s immortal “tintinnabuli” technique. The intersection of Pärt’s experience as a practitioner of Russian Orthodox Christianity, a defector of the Soviet Union, and a pioneer among 20th-century composers mold “Passio” into a piece with an unmistakable gravitas. Pärt hearkens to Orthodox concepts of kenosis, hesychasm, and epiklesis, generating a piece that is highly dramatic and sublimely intimate—a sonic manifestation of empathy and creation.
“Passio” is presented as a senior recital in partial fulfillment of the Music major for Alex Whittington.
