ORFEO
by Luigi Rossi
The Yale Baroque Opera Project (YBOP) presents Rossi’s Orfeo, April 27-28 at 3pm at the University Theatre, in a new production with stage direction by Toni Dorfman and music direction by Grant Herreid.
Orfeo, composed in 1647 by Luigi Rossi, with a libretto by Francesco Buti, is a classic Italian Baroque opera that recounts the tragic myth of the lovers Orpheus and Eurydice.
Founded in 2007, YBOP has provided Yale students the opportunity to explore historical and aesthetic studies related to Italian opera from the 17th and early 18th centuries. The students’ coursework culminates with a full-scale professional opera production which serves to promote the study and performance of Baroque opera at both Yale and beyond. Featuring undergraduate singers and undergraduate, graduate, and professional instrumentalists from the Yale community, Orfeo is free and open to the public.
