Meet the Bensons
by adaptation of a play by Efua Sutherland
The Bensons are in a financial bind; unpaid utility bills, an uncompleted housing renovation project and a reputation to protect! Mrs. Benson, in a desperate attempt to ring in some extra cash, devises an unthinkable plot - a marriage! She places her beautiful and smart daughter, Aku Shika, up for bids without her consent and receives offers from wealthy suitors from all over the continent. After accepting the marriage proposals of not one nor two, but four powerful monarchs, it’s time to give them their bride! One Aku Shika, four eager chiefs and an unquenchable thirst for more money. Is resolution even a possibility?
Meet the Benson is an adaptation of “The marriage of Anansewa” by Efua Sutherland, a popular Ghanaian playwright. It touches on the themes of marriage, duty, and family. This comedic satire is a flagrant celebration of different African cultures and languages.
