Making Light
An orignal play about stand up comedians.
Ezra Leonard is a successful stand-up comedian secretly terrified that there’s no real self underneath all his jokes — just a persona built from other people’s lives and pain. When a rival comic, Jonah Darling, breaks out with raw, personal, confessional material and starts to eclipse him, Ezra’s rivalry with him curdles into something closer to war, as he steals (or “transforms”) Jonah’s best bit for his own big break. Around them, Charlotte and Bo — his oldest friends — watch his unraveling with growing discomfort, each carrying their own quiet resentments and departures. Underneath it all is Veronica, Ezra’s ex, who turns out to be the one actually writing the story we’re watching: she’s the secret author of the whole play, and by the end she stops staying in the wings and names the chain of theft running through everyone’s lives. It plays out across boxing-round-titled sections, with recurring images — a dreaming octopus, sleeping whales, an albatross, a broken boxer statue — tying together its real question: whether making something out of our pain (a joke, a story, art) is a way of truly living, or just another way of avoiding it.
