Off-Key: A Musical for the Musical
by Tessa Murthy
The original musical Off-Key is, as its name indicates, a musical production for the musically inclined. Written to bring relatable laughs to classical and pop musicians alike, Off-Key pokes fun at the tension between jazz and academic musicians, and comments on the prejudices each vein of musical involvement holds about the other. Off-Key tells the story of the unlikely partnership between Paul, a rigidly classical concert pianist, and Christine, a jazz composer and improviser. When Paul and Christine enter a high-stakes music contest, pandemonium is sure to result, especially as they try to navigate midterm exams, their friends’ reactions, and Paul’s strictly anti-jazz mother.
