The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace
by Kamala Sankaram
In December, OTYC will be presenting Kamala Sankaram’s chamber opera “The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace.” From Sankaram’s website: “Ada, Countess of Lovelace and Lord Byron’s daughter, has been asked to help Charles Babbage with his work on the Difference Engine. Can she pursue her love of mathematics while upholding her reputation?” The work is set in the middle of the nineteenth century, in a Surrey estate, and a London laboratory. We plan on presenting this chamber opera alongside a lecture on computing in the arts.
The work is scored for four singers, singing six parts:
Augusta Ada Byron, Countess of Lovelace (mezzo-soprano)
William King-Noel, 1st Earl of Lovelace (tenor)
Charles Babbage, Fellow of the Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge/A Butler (baritone)
Harriet Beecher Stowe/A Nanny (Soprano)
