Happy Birthday, Wanda June

by Kurt Vonnegut

Happy Birthday, Wanda June

Happy Birthday, Wanda June is a dark comedy that examines “men who enjoy killing and those who don’t.” Vonnegut reinterprets Odysseus’s arrival home to Penelope through the lens of returning war hero Harold Ryan and the changed family and society he comes home to after years presumed dead. Set against the cultural backdrop of the Vietnam War, the play explores masculinity, violence, toxic heroism, pacifism, and postwar capitalistic American values, delivered with Vonnegut’s signature existential absurdity and wit.
