Domingo de Ramos

The Choral Music of Passiontide in Puerto Rico
domingoderamosposter
One short year after the US invasion of Puerto Rico, one of the island’s most prolific composers would pass away on November 27th, 1899. Felipe Gutiérrez y Espinosa’s musical contributions, however, would echo beyond the walls of the Catedral de San Juan for decades to come. This brief lecture recital will investigate Gutiérrez’s immense compositional output and his impact on the musical environment of Puerto Rico throughout the 19th century and beyond.

This program will feature new editions of Gutiérrez’s Pasión del Domingo de Ramos and Misa de Réquiem n°2 and will be accompanied by choral works by Puerto Rican composers from the 20th and 21st centuries.
