Cavalli’s Veremonda
by Yale Baroque Opera Project
Announcing the spring semester opera production:
VEREMONDA
Opera in Three Acts
Music by Francesco Cavalli Libretto by Giulio Cicognini, revised by Giulio Strozzi
First performed in either Venice or Naples, 1652/3
Grant Herreid. Music Director Toni Dorfman, Stage Director
The story takes place in Gibraltar during the siege of the Moorish fort by the Spanish army. But the siege is
delayed: the general of the Spanish army is having a secret love affair with the Moorish queen, who with the
help of their respective servants meet every night in the woods by the citadel. The Spanish king is distracted
from his military and conjugal duties by his pursuit of scientific studies. Moonlit nights contrast with raucous
festivals and religious celebrations as tensions rise between East and West. Finally an Amazonian army is
formed and trained for battle, and love, ambition and duty meet head to head.
