A Senior Project in American Studies for Emily Locke

In a small town in the middle of nowhere, America, beautiful (read: white) high school girls have been disappearing and found, murdered. 14-year-old Asian American Panny develops a complex: is she not beautiful — or white — enough to be kidnapped and killed? Through the play, Panny navigates white America’s standards for beauty and worth, communicates via letters to her Korean pen-pal, and begins a budding romantic phone-based relationship with a boy (!!!??), while her uncle begins dating a horoscope-fanatic who works at the same mall as him, and her mother accidentally seduces the pizza delivery guy. This play is a very dark comedy with a wild ensemble of characters and a chilling indictment of American beauty norms.
