The Cold Equations

The premise is simple: the captain of an emergency dispatch ship carrying necessary medical supplies to a frontier world discovers a stowaway. As these ships only carry a precisely calculated amount of fuel, all stowaways must be jettisoned so as to not doom the pilot and recipients of the ship’s load. However, the captain learns to their horror that the stowaway is an innocent 18-year-old girl. What follows is a poignant, riveting, and ultimately tragic story, one whose memento mori juxtaposes the triumphs of the human spirit and the downfalls which ultimately rend it asunder. The goal of this project is to tell a bittersweet story which asks its audience to grapple with both the hubris of our daring and the veracity of the bonds which hold us together.
