A Tough Pill to Swallow

by Mia Bauer

New York City. New Year's Day. 1972. A Tough Pill to Swallow. Written and Directed by Mia Bauer. Spring 2024.

In 1971, Sarah-Anne’s and John’s teenage daughter Sonia ran away from her Hamptons home to join the hippie movement in New York City, causing long-running family tensions to snap. Now, a year later, it is closing night at the Broadway musical Company, and John, who plays the leading role, must face the question: return home to Sarah-Anne or leave his broken family behind? This one-act play, which interweaves the conversations held by each family member on the fateful day, is an examination of the transformative power of love and honesty and of why we choose to love when it is so often painful.
