The Road

by Edwin Sanchez

The Road by Edwin Sanchez, April 25th & 26th, Hopper Cabaret, Directed by Jacob-Yoder-Schrock, Produced by Jocelyn Wexler

Ralphy, a young man who is dying of AIDS, runs away from his parents’ home and embarks on a cross-country journey to escape his rage and face his life and death. His mother, Clara, hides his disappearance, until Jack, his father, finds one of the letters Ralphy has sent them. Clara and Jack write their own letters—each one an expression of grief and frustration of a parent at losing a child—and store them in the box, in the hope that one day Ralphy will return. Their letters are sarcastic, caustic, loving, and funny, all at the same time. Together, the family of three contends with the pain they have inflicted on each other, and grieve their mutual loss.

Edwin Sanchez (YSD ‘94) is the award-winning playwright of UNMERCIFUL GOOD FORTUNE, ICARUS, and CLEAN, among others. He often mentors student playwrights as part of the annual Yale Playwrights’ Festival.
