La Marea (Thesis Screenplay)
by Layla Felder
Young singer Thea Bauer is cast to revive the titular role in the gothic opera Maria de Rudenz in celebration of Lidia Gentilini, a world-famous soprano whose legendary debut of the role at La Scala 150 years earlier ended in her mysterious death. First fascinated, then obsessed with Lidia, Thea becomes increasingly entangled by the macabre shroud that covers Lidia’s history, slowly losing the thread between the world of the opera and reality. What happens when a young singer obsessed with Great Artistry, yet doubtful of her own abilities, is haunted by the legacy of a Great Artist? In a whirlwind spiral of admiration turned obsession turned psychosis, this is the story of how a young singer loses herself in pursuit of perfection.
